The country is going to raise the age limit to 40 years

Chairman of the Belarus Constitutional Court Petr Miklashevitch has aimed to revise age limits upwards, according to the BELTA news agency.

According to the current requirements, any Belarus citizen above 35 can be elected as president if he hasn’t left the country over the last ten years. Now, this rule might be changed.

«We are suggesting to keep the presidential form of the government but to change some requirements to the presidency candidates legislated in the country’s Constitution. Presidency candidate should be at least 40 years old. Moreover, the resident qualification should be changed from 10 to 20 years of constant residence in the country right before the elections. Candidates will also be obliged to not have dual citizenship,» Miklashevitch said.

For the first time, he touched on the topic in April, when he said that there is no need to change the form of government from presidential republic to parliamentary government or presidential-parliamentary government.
