The possible reason for that is chlorine the plant emits fourfold more than it should be

One of the biggest enterprises in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk titanium-magnesium plant has scared locals with bright pink smoke, which comes out of its chimney. Experts from the Department of the Environment for the East Kazakhstan region took air samples.

Neither the plant executives nor local officials confirmed the failure.

«Once our colleagues from the Department of Environment received complaints from local residents, they have conducted an unscheduled inspection at the plant. Once we have all the results of that examination, we will prepare a conclusion. So far, we can’t confirm any failure on the site,» said Rauan Turarov, chief state environmental inspector in Kazakhstan.

However, he reported that the rapid analyses of the air near the plant have shown large traces of chlorine.

As the Kursiv.kz website already reported, Ust-Kamenogorsk is the city with the most polluted air in the country due to a thermal power station and several big metallurgical plants which are located in the city boundaries. When there is no wind the situation in Usk-Kamenogorsk easily goes from bad to worse.

All industrial enterprises in Kazakhstan must pay the government for chemical emissions. Last year the East Kazakhstan region paid a $13.4 million fine.
