Ex-Minister of Energy Assumes New Post in Kazakhstan

He has become the new akim of the Almaty region

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Kanat Bozumbayev, a former minister of energy as the new head of the Almaty region, the president’s press service reported.

Bozumbayev is going to replace Amandyk Batalov, who served as akim (governor) of the region up until recently. The president has already signed all proper documents.

«To appoint Kanat Bozumbayev to the post of governor of the Almaty region and discharge him from the position of an assistant to the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan,» the president’s edict said.

Kanat Bozumbayev is an economist; he has graduated from the Kazakh State Academy of Management.

He has been working in the public sector since 1997. Twice he served as a governor in the Zhambyl and Pavlodar regions.

Also, he worked in the quasi-state sector and different agencies linked to the energy industry. 

Over 2016-2019 he worked as minister of energy; was an assistant to the president. 

He left the office due to surgery on his cervical spine in 2019. Back then doctors had advised him to cut the frequency of flights and travel.
