Former Head of National Bank to Lead Kazakh Strategic Planning Agency

Kairat Kelimbetov has been appointed to a new position

Former head of the National Bank of Kazakhstan Kairat Kelimbetov has been appointed head of the Strategic Planning and Reforms Agency of Kazakhstan. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed the corresponding decree, the president’s press office (Akorda) reports.

«Karat Kelimbetov, Governor of Astana International Financial Centre, is appointed chairman of the Strategic Planning and Reforms Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan,» the head of the state’s decree read.

Kairat Kelimbetov was born on January 28, 1969. In 1993 he graduated from Moscow State University, and in 1996 from the Institute of Market at the Kazakh State Academy of Administration (Narxoz University today) and from the National Higher School of Public Administration under the President of the RK. In 1999, he graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in economics.

Over the years, Kelimbetov served as Chairman of the Board of the JSC Sustainable Development Fund «Kazyna,» head of the Administration of the President of the RK, CB of the National Welfare Fund “Samruk-Kazyna,” Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Deputy Prime Minister of the RK, CB of the National Bank of the RK, and Governor of Astana International Financial Center.

Previously, Tokayev decreed to create the Strategic Planning and Reforms Agency of the RK. The newly formed agency will take on the National Economy Ministry’s functions and powers on strategic planning and state statistical activities.
