Kazakhstan Examines New Ways to Increase Cybersecurity

On December 6, 2020, the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Airspace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National Security Committee (or KNB) have launched cybersecurity training in the country’s capital Nur-Sultan. All its residents have been warned that access to foreign web sources might be limited. 

As Kazakhstani officials noted, because of the pandemic and remote work there was a surge in the number of cyberattacks on the country’s digital infrastructure. Compared to last year, the surge of cyberattacks has risen 2.7 times in 2020, the ministry reported.  

To resist this threat, Kazakhstani authorities are going to rely on specific organizations including the National Center for Information Security, Cybershield of Kazakhstan, Center for Cyberattacks Analysis and Investigation, communications providers and cybersecurity specialists from state agencies and the private sector.

«During the anti-cyberattacks training, users may face limited access to some foreign resources. These problems might disappear if the user installs a security certificate. For more details about the certificate and the tutorial on how to install it, please contact your provider,» the KNB said.

However, according to the Center for Cyberattacks Analysis and Investigation, there is currently no need for such a certificate; it might be relevant only in case of terrorist attacks or during wartime.
